Dr. Donald Vichick specializes in injuries and conditions affecting the hands and upper extremities at New Mexico Orthopaedics. Dr. Vichick believes in treating the whole person and maintains that the recovery process is a team effort, that utilizes the talents of a therapist and a lot of hard work on the part of each patient. His ultimate goal for all of his patients, regardless of the severity of injury, is to preserve and restore function to allow them to return as productive members of society.
He developed a passion for building and repairing things as a young child, inspired and empowered by the mechanical knowledge and aptitude passed on to him by his father. The progression of his fascination in all things mechanical combined with his personal interests and hobbies made orthopedics and hand surgery a natural extension of his experiences and a perfect choice for Dr. Vichick.
Dr. Vichick proudly served his country as a Colonel in the United States Army Medical Corps. His professional experience also includes serving as Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics and Director of Hand Surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center as well as Hospital Commander at Irwin Army Hospital. Following military retirement, he joined the orthopedic/hand surgery staff at the University of New Mexico Medical Center, where he also served as Director of Rehab Services and Director of the Amputee Service. He joined a private practice in Albuquerque in 1993, specializing principally in work-related conditions of the upper extremity and amputee care.
Dr. Vichick is dedicated to remaining a productive physician and continuing to help his patients to live productive lives of their own. He finds fulfillment in sharing his vast knowledge with others and teaches at a variety of levels, including high-performance driving skills at the racetrack. In addition to the joy that spending time with his family bring to him, he also enjoys life and all of its gifts to the fullest and hopes to inspire others to do the same.
