(Printable profile for Robert Wilson, MD)
Dr. Robert Wilson, a native of New Mexico, specializes in musculoskeletal and sports medicine, with a special interest in osteoarthritis of the knee. Since the earliest days of his career, he has felt strongly that the foundation of good health and disease prevention is exercise and a physically active lifestyle. His practice addresses orthopaedic problems in athletes and exercise enthusiasts of all ages with treatment regimens that are strongly based on physical therapy and exercise prescriptions for life.
Dr. Wilson affirms that what he provides to his patients in the office, whether an injection or a medical prescription, is but a small part of what is needed to accomplish an individual’s goals. Success depends upon patients' willingness to take advice and apply it in their lives.
Before joining New Mexico Orthopaedics, Dr. Wilson was a family physician. He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service at Zuni PHS Indian Hospital. He also served as the Diabetes Control Officer for the Albuquerque Area Indian Health Service. Dr. Wilson has served previously as a part of the clinical faculty at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, and as the Chairman of the Sports Medicine Committee of the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association. He also values his time as the team physician for Sandia Preparatory School in Albuquerque. Dr. Wilson is often called upon as an expert speaker and consultant in the area of viscosupplementation injections.
Dr. Wilson wants his patients to know he treats their orthopaedic problems the same way that he has treated his own, and that he has had to make many of the same life decisions that he asks them to make. After a knee injury led to arthritis, he gave up soccer and took up cycling. More recently, he returned to competitive swimming, many years after a varsity swimming career in college. He feels that sports and exercise are a permanent part of his life, and a basis for his own good health.
