Dr. John Ray maintains a demanding surgical practice specializing in the treatment of complex neck and back problems. His primary interest is in complex deformities and degenerative changes of the cervical spine.  Dr. Ray is pleased that he is able to offer a personal touch to the care he provides to each of his patients, whom he often considers to be his friends.  He extends an individualized approach to the care of those who seek his insights and experience.

He deeply enjoys being a part of the innovation in the field of spinal surgery and feels his prior experience and interest in dealing with mechanical systems, coupled with the enjoyment of working with his hands, is a natural fit with orthopaedic medicine.

He spent one year in the Public Health Service at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in western New Mexico as a general orthopaedic surgeon before completing his Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship at the University of California at Davis with Drs. Benson and Gupta specializing in pediatric and adult deformity, cross-training in the Department of Neurosurgery as time allowed.

Dr. Ray has an extensive technical background. Prior to entering medicine, he was an engineer active in the electrical and mechanical design and optimization of high performance electro-mechanical devices.

Away from the office, Dr. Ray is active in the outdoors and enjoys being able to share in all that these activities have to offer with his family and friends. In addition to hiking, camping and biking, Dr. Ray likes to run in the mountains and  often competes in races ranging from 3 to 100 miles.   He was born and raised in Colorado and enjoys the weather, geography and activities of the Southwest.
