Dr. Richard Castillo, a native of New Mexico, specializes in the non-surgical and surgical management of back and neck pain patients. He performs spine surgery in addition to managing back pain patients using non-surgical treatments. Dr. Castillo has been with New Mexico Orthopaedic Associates since 1990 and transitioned to its Center of Excellence known as New Mexico Spine upon its founding in 1999. He is on active staff at the New Mexico Orthopaedics Surgery Center and Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Castillo is well-known in the Greater Albuquerque area for his non-surgical treatment approach to spinal problems.  He is proud to have trained under Dr. Bigos, a nationally recognized expert in non-surgical management of back and neck pain.  Dr Castillo and his colleagues at New Mexico Spine adhere to the shared philosophy that most back problems can be resolved via conservative care, and therefore surgical intervention should only be used when truly appropriate.

Following in his father’s footsteps, a respected surgeon in his own right, Dr. Castillo has long felt a natural draw to a career in the medical field and draws upon his keen interest in medicine and mechanical aptitude to specialize in the field of orthopedic surgery.

Away from the office, Dr. Castillo indulges in much of the vast beauty and immense variety that his home state has to offer.  His passions include indulging in frequent weekend hikes and fishing trips.
